Peter Gaynor
Peter Gaynor served as the acting secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He was a member of President Donald Trump's (R) administration. Gaynor became the acting secretary on January 11, 2021, after Chad Wolf's resignation.[1] He left office on January 20, 2021.
The secretary of Homeland Security is responsible for "counterterrorism, cybersecurity, aviation security, border security, port security, maritime security, administration and enforcement of our immigration laws, protection of our national leaders, protection of critical infrastructure, detection of and protection against chemical, biological and nuclear threats to the homeland, and response to disasters."[2]
Biography
Gaynor holds an associate degree from the Community College of Rhode Island, a bachelor's degree from Rhode Island College, and a master's degree from the U.S. Naval War College. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1977 to 1981 and from 1986 to 2007. Afterward, he served in the Providence Emergency Management Agency, the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.[3]
