I was born in Wadena, MN and moved to St. Cloud with my family in 1976. I have resided in St. Cloud and St. Joseph ever since.

I graduated from St. Cloud Apollo in 1984. I graduated from St. Cloud State University in 1989 with a major in Political Science and a minor in Local & Urban Affairs.

My wife Amy and I are empty nesters, having seen her three and my two children all graduate from Apollo. I’m employed as an Account Manager for Ascent Specialized (a trucking broker) and am a licensed Realtor with Central MN Realty.

My interest in public education started with my parents, particularly my dad. He was a founder of the Wadena Area Technical Institute (now MN State Community and Technical College Wadena) and retired as the president of the St. Cloud Technical College (now St Cloud Technical and Community College). There were many times that I would travel to St. Paul with him, where he would meet with state representatives and senators. I believe that this experience not only taught me the importance of public education but also showed me the necessity for conversation. Whether or not you agree with the other person, a respectful conversation helps everyone’s thought process.
  • STUDENT AND STAFF SAFETY The District has done a great job designing and implementing safe and secure entrances to our buildings. The safety of our students and staff while inside the building has always been and continues to be a concern. It’s no different in any school district and it’s an issue that realistically has been around for decades. But with the advent of social media, the playing field has changed. We need to continue to research, discuss, agree to and implement processes that insure everyone is safe inside our buildings.
  • FULLY FUNDING SPECIAL EDUCATION The Board needs to work with legislators to increase Special Education funding. 742 has outstanding Special Education programs and staff. But the reality is that such programs cause the District to use general education dollars to fund Special Education (referred to as the Cross Subsidy). The state is obligated to fund mandatory Special Education programs, yet, it still doesn’t do so.
  • WHY 742 IS A DESTINATION DISTRICT 742 offers dozens of programs that enhance or are an alternative to standard classroom learning. They all take into account the individual needs of the student, helping to put them on a path to graduation and life after high school. From advanced courses to career courses to alternative learning environments, 742 finds the way to guide each student. Add to that fine arts programs, clubs and a full array of athletics, 742 is truly a destination district.
Fully funding public education needs to be a top priority of the state. Public education is what develops the workers, leaders, caretakers - the future adults - of our society. We owe it to them, and ourselves, to fund every means possible to provide them the education that they need.
My parents. While both are no longer with us, their words and actions taught me how I should live my life.
Honesty. Compassion. Willingness and ability to listen to all sides. Making decisions to help the greater good.
Researching, listening, discussing...then repeat the process.
Retail. I worked there all through college.
School Board members are in charge of policy. They are not involved in day-to-day operations.
All those who reside in 742 and/or are involved some way in our schools.
I have trust in those who are tasked with supporting such. But I also realize that it's not as easy as that. If I have questions, I will ask. I do not do there job but I need to have a grasp of what they are doing.
I think that it's important to be present a broad range of activities and events in and around our school community. To be there as someone that will take the time to listen to our community members, to learn about things I may not have any knowledge of.
I have trust that those with training and experience in these areas are qualified to lead in such.
I have proven in the past that I can work with members of the state legislature to understand our (and other districts) financial needs. I intend to do this again.
742 has methods and procedures in place and, through collaboration with all stakeholders, continues to explore areas to adjust and improve.
I would need to have a deeper understanding of what is in place to address such a complex issue.
One in which a student feels safe, acknowledged and understood. And also one in which each student feels that faculty, staff and leadership want what is best for them.
I will be available by phone, text, email or in person if needed.
I think the more that we continue to show how 742 is a destination district, highly qualified employees will come to us.
742 has recently held sessions to address AI and I would need to review the discussions and action plans around it.
There are a lot of stories about staff and parents that have gone above and beyond to assist students that have been put in tough situations beyond their control.
