|I graduated from St. Cloud Apollo in 1984. I graduated from St. Cloud State University in 1989 with a major in Political Science and a minor in Local & Urban Affairs.
My wife Amy and I are empty nesters, having seen her three and my two children all graduate from Apollo. I’m employed as an Account Manager for Ascent Specialized (a trucking broker) and am a licensed Realtor with Central MN Realty.
My interest in public education started with my parents, particularly my dad. He was a founder of the Wadena Area Technical Institute (now MN State Community and Technical College Wadena) and retired as the president of the St. Cloud Technical College (now St Cloud Technical and Community College). There were many times that I would travel to St. Paul with him, where he would meet with state representatives and senators. I believe that this experience not only taught me the importance of public education but also showed me the necessity for conversation. Whether or not you agree with the other person, a respectful conversation helps everyone’s thought process.- STUDENT AND STAFF SAFETY The District has done a great job designing and implementing safe and secure entrances to our buildings. The safety of our students and staff while inside the building has always been and continues to be a concern. It’s no different in any school district and it’s an issue that realistically has been around for decades. But with the advent of social media, the playing field has changed. We need to continue to research, discuss, agree to and implement processes that insure everyone is safe inside our buildings.
- FULLY FUNDING SPECIAL EDUCATION The Board needs to work with legislators to increase Special Education funding. 742 has outstanding Special Education programs and staff. But the reality is that such programs cause the District to use general education dollars to fund Special Education (referred to as the Cross Subsidy). The state is obligated to fund mandatory Special Education programs, yet, it still doesn’t do so.
- WHY 742 IS A DESTINATION DISTRICT 742 offers dozens of programs that enhance or are an alternative to standard classroom learning. They all take into account the individual needs of the student, helping to put them on a path to graduation and life after high school. From advanced courses to career courses to alternative learning environments, 742 finds the way to guide each student. Add to that fine arts programs, clubs and a full array of athletics, 742 is truly a destination district.
