Peter Lopez (New York)
Peter D. Lopez is a former Republican member of the New York State Assembly, representing District 102 from 2013 to 2017. He resigned his seat in October 2017. On September 28, 2017, the Trump administration picked Lopez as the new EPA administrator for region 2. Region 2 includes New York, New Jersey, and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.[1]
Lopez was a 2016 Republican candidate who sought election to the U.S. House to represent the 19th Congressional District of New York. He withdrew in January 2016, citing his father's diagnosis with cancer as the cause.[2][3]
He previously represented District 127 in the Assembly from 2007 to 2013. Lopez's political experience includes being a clerk for Schoharie County, a member of the Schoharie County Board of Supervisors and a supervisor and trustee for the Village of Schoharie.
Biography
Lopez earned his B.A. from State University College at Cobleskill and his M.P.A. from the University of Albany.[4]
His professional experience includes being district office director for New York State Assembly Minority Leader John Faso, serving as assistant director for the New York State Legislative Commission on Rural Resources, working as an associate director of the New York State Senate Agriculture Committee and working as an executive assistant for New York State Senator John Bonacic.[5]

New York's 19th Congressional District was a battleground district in 2016. Incumbent Chris Gibson (R), who began serving in Congress in 2011, chose not to seek re-election in 2016, leaving the seat open. John Faso (R) defeated Zephyr Teachout (D) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Faso defeated Andrew Heaney in the Republican primary, while Teachout defeated Will Yandik to win the Democratic nomination. The primary elections took place on June 28, 2016.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16]
