Peter Murphy is the District 4 representative on the Springfield Public Schools school board in Massachusetts. First elected in 2009, Murphy won a new term in the by-district general election on November 7, 2017.
Murphy was a 2014 Democratic candidate for the Ninth Hampden District of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He was defeated in the primary election on September 9, 2014.[1]
Biography
Murphy earned a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts and a J.D. from the Quinnipiac University School of Law.[2] Before founding his own law practice, he served as an assistant district attorney in Hampden County and as an associate city solicitor.[3]

2017
Six of the seven seats on the Springfield Public Schools School Committee in Massachusetts were up for general election on November 7, 2017. Incumbent Denise M. Hurst and newcomer LaTonia Naylor won election, defeating James Ferrera III and Ryan Hess for the at-large seats. Incumbent Barbara Gresham defeated Stephanie Murchison-Brown for the District 2 seat. Newcomer Maria Perez and incumbent Christopher Collins ran unopposed and won the District 1 and 3 seats, respectively. The District 4 race was won by incumbent Peter Murphy; he defeated challenger Zaida Govan.[4][5][6][7]
A primary election was held for the at-large and District 2 seats on September 19, 2017. Four candidates advanced to the general election from the at-large primary, and two candidates advanced from the District 2 primary.[4] James Anziano, LaMar Cook, Joesiah Gonzalez, and Michael Kocmiersky were defeated in the at-large primary, and Giselle Vizcarrondo was defeated in the District 2 primary.[6]

Murphy began the race with an existing account balance of $14.77 from his previous campaign. He reported $4,725.00 in contributions and $1,246.00 in expenditures to City of Springfield, which left his campaign with $3,493.77 on hand in the election.[8]
2014
Elections for the Massachusetts House of Representatives took place in 2014. A primary election was held on September 9, 2014, and a general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 3, 2014. Jose Tosado defeated Edward Collins, Jr. and Peter Murphy in the Democratic primary and defeated Robert J. Underwood (unenrolled Libertarian) in the general election.[9]
