Sentenced to learn English
Judge Olszewski ordered three Spanish-speaking men to learn English or go to jail. Luis Reyes, Ricardo Dominguez, Rafael Guzman-Mateo and Kelvin Reyes-Rosario were in a group that police said accosted two men on a street in May 2007. The two were asked if they had marijuana, told to empty their pockets, struck on the head, threatened with a gun and told to stay off the block, according to the Associated Press.[2]
The men reportedly needed a translator at trial, prompting the judge to ask, "Do you think we are going to supply you with a translator all of your life?" He sentenced the four men to jail terms of four to twenty-four months, and gave three men who had already served at least four months immediate parole. Reyes-Rosario remained incarcerated on an unrelated charge. The judge ordered the other three men to return with their parole officers in a year to take an English test, saying, "If they don't pass, they're going in for the 24 [months]."[2]
