The position of Town Council is a non-partisan position.

I have lived in Eatonville for 25 years, raised 4 children here. During that time, I have been a volunteer for Eatonville Youth Sports Association, PTA President of a local elementary school, and volunteered in many community events.

I strive to work with the other Council members, town staff, and town residents to achieve goals that are beneficial to the town. During this first term, I have been outspoken on several issues, always approaching each issue with a willingness to discuss my position.
  • Data-driven decision making. I have consistently worked to understand each item presented at council so I can make a well-informed decision. My votes have always reflected what I have thought to be in the best interest of the town.
  • I have a desire to keep Eatonville a small town, while allowing for growth and development. This sounds counter-intuitive, I know. But by being careful with the decisions, advocating for things like parks and recreation, and understanding that growth is inevitable, I have attempted to retain the small-town feel.
  • Our town has some critical issues facing us in the near future. First is budget, we are not unlike every other town and city in Washington with significant budget constraints. Thoughtful spending is the best course forward, coupled with realistic expectations about what can be accomplished. The second major issue is water. We need to fix our water system to control the losses due to leaking. We need to explore alternative water sources for the town. And we need to work to restrict our dependence on the Mashel River, which is our primary supply.
Water is the most important. Ensuring we have public spaces, green spaces, parks. Helping citizens with needs to ensure that all are treated fairly and with respect - helping our neighbors when they need assistance.
Town Council is where the rubber meets the road. Literally, the decisions made at this level impact each resident individually, making the role of vital importance.

Listening to the concerns of residents, standing up for what is right, voicing my opinion - these are the qualities that are needed at this level.

Beyond the direct impact locally, the town government is also the conduit to state and federal resources and programs. Looking for opportunities that will benefit the town. In addition, looking for and working toward grants and other opportunities serves our town and residents.
There are many people I have looked up to and whose examples I have attempted to follow.

Harry Chapin who worked tirelessly to raise money to combat world hunger.

Jimmy Carter whose high ethical standard and humanitarianism described an amazing life.

Richard Feynman who tried to apply science to real-world problems, lived his life boldly, stood up for his beliefs.

Elizabeth Warren who has fearlessly stood up for citizen rights, including her role on the Consumer Protection Agency.

There are many others - these are the few I will list here.
You should expect the highest ethical behavior from your elected officials. I will always serve ethically and will avoid any appearance of conflict.

In addition, I am willing to call out what I find to be unethical behavior from others in office. It is an honor to serve as an elected official and you should expect from me transparency and honesty.
The core responsibility is to serve in the best interest of the town and the citizens. I have done this by ensuring I have a clear understanding of the issues at hand, asking questions to further validate that understanding, and voting accordingly.
I would like to leave a legacy of honesty and integrity.
The Fools' Progress by Edward Abbey. It is an amazing story of introspection and failure, and the willingness to admit to those failures. The story is the final journey of a man who is looking back on his life, his loves, accomplishments, and failures as he tries to get home one last time.

His honest evaluation of the mistakes he has made, and there are many, has drawn me to read the book several times.
No. The position powers and responsibilities are well-known.

I encourage everyone to attend Town Council meetings, each 2nd and 4th Mondays at 7:00 pm at the Community Center. Showing up and hearing what is being discussed, asking questions, expecting answers - that partnership between local government and citizens is crucial.
No. A large portion of this position just requires a willingness to read and learn. And a majority of issues presented have clear answers that may require some discussion or debate, but most are not controversial or difficult.

This position is a great role for civic-minded citizens who want to contribute.
Again, a willingness to spend time reading about the issues presented. A willingness to ask questions both in meetings and outside of those, to fully comprehend the decisions and ramifications.
The position of Town Council member requires working with the other council members and town administration to help describe goals and achieve them. The ability to talk with people of all beliefs, ask tough questions, LISTEN to what they tell you, even if you don't agree. These are the critical qualities.
