Peter W. Agnes, Jr.
Peter W. Agnes Jr. is a former associate justice on the Massachusetts Appeals Court, the intermediate appellate court for the state of Massachusetts. He served on the court from 2011 to 2020. Agnes was appointed to this position by Governor Deval Patrick and joined the court on September 8, 2011.[1] He retired from the court on April 11, 2020.[2]
Education
Agnes earned his bachelor's degree from Boston University in 1972 and his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in 1975.[1]
Career
After graduating from law school, Agnes clerked for New Hampshire Supreme Court Justice Edward Lampron. He worked as an assistant district attorney from 1976 to 1982, first in Middlesex County and then in Norfolk County. He served as both the assistant secretary for public safety and the acting director of the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council from 1986 to 1989. Agnes was chief of operations for Governor Michael Dukakis until 1991, when he became First Justice of the Charlestown District Court. He held that position until he advanced to the Superior Court in 2000. In 2011, Justice Agnes was appointed to the Massachusetts Appeals Court by Governor Deval Patrick. He also taught as an adjunct professor at the Massachusetts School of Law for over 15 years.[1]
