Rev. Phil Hodson is the pastor of Wichita United Church of Christ and serves on the site council at Robert Martin Elementary in Andover.

Phil graduated from Purdue University and Southern Methodist University.

He is married to the amazing Joelle and they are the proud parents of Xander, Xane, Xackary, and Daisy, the family Labrador Retriever.
  • Equip Our Schools: Our children deserve the very best.
  • Protect Our Health: Expand Medicaid access for Kansas families.
  • Invest in Our Future: Freedom through Economic Opportunity
As a proud public school parent, I believe that now is the time to resource or schools, administrators, and staff so that our children are equipped to meet tomorrow's challenges in a safe, secure environment. Instead of considering cuts to education funding, expansion of Medicaid in our state will bolster rural hospitals and undergird the communities they serve while freeing up funding in the current state budget to provide for strong public education. We should rely on the wisdom of our local school boards and municipal leaders and function in the legislature to make sure they have everything they need to serve our community effectively. By eliminating the food tax in Kansas - one of the highest in the nation - we can make healthy fod available to more of our neighbors. Investment in infrastructure will create stable jobs and spur further business development in our communities, for which a secure education system will prepare our children, and through which additional investment into Kansas' economy will be attracted. All of this will keep our communities healthy, safe, and vibrant.
My paternal grandfather has always been my hero. A minister for forty-one years, he taught me the importance of serving others and speaking out for what you believe in. The pastor has a role as "servant-leader" in their community, always willing to listen to and learn from others, but also to act as a guide and advocate in the public square. He was a voracious reader with a curious mind and inspired in me the desire to challenge myself intellectually and spiritually, to never stop growing.
Listening: We must be connected in our local communities and seek to hear the perspectives of our neighbors.

Curiosity: We must seek to be continually learning, to uncover facts and new information, to work transparently and effectively.

Integrity: We must conduct ourselves, in word and action, to represent those interests in elected office.
As a pastor, I strive to actively listen to all voices in the community I serve, to thoughtfully consider various perspectives, and to guide decisive solutions that benefit the community as a whole. I will bring these qualities to my service in the Kansas House of Representatives by being present and available in the local community, fostering relationships in the legislature regardless of party affiliation, and working diligently to craft solutions that benefit my fellow Kansans.
To serve as a strong advocate for our local interests and public institutions by actively listening locally. To work cooperatively and thoughtfully to craft solutions that raise communities across the state. And to act decisively for a positive, noticeable change.
I remember watching the Berlin Wall fall down and watching exciting new possibilities open up for an entire people. I was nine years old at the time.
I worked for my father's law firm running errands during my freshman and sophomore years in high school.
At the moment, it happens to be "Baby Shark" by Pink Fong. We have a two-year-old son and, as I write, our smart speaker is playing this tune as I watch him happily work his way through the hand motions and dance around the room.
I believe it important to invite new voices into the legislative process and to engage real-world, practical experience in the work of the legislature.
Growing up, I learned that the government was most effective when those in public office were able to connect personally with one another. Forging strong personal relationships, regardless of party affiliation, allows us to speak openly and trust in the integrity of one another. Doing so creates a space where we can truly hear one another's perspectives, thoughtfully consider ways to be effective cooperatively, and take decisive action to benefit the people we are elected to serve.
The legislature should seek guidance from an independent, non-partisan resource in determining plans for redistricting.
Education is an extremely important aspect of development and growth in our community. To advocate for our interests in the legislature, I would like to serve on the education committee.
