Campaign themes
2014
Gim's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]
Make the Legislature A Full Time Job
- Excerpt: "Legislators are already paid as if they are working full-time, so let's make it official. We should declare a position in the New York State legislature to be full-time, and not allow legislators to take outside jobs or act as advisors to corporate interests, and:"
Close The Revolving Door on Lobbyists
- Excerpt: "Far too many legislators and legislative staff members take advantage of the revolving door system that has become so pervasive in Albany. Everyone knows how it works: spend a few years in the legislature giving out favors to corporations and then get hired by those same corporations to lobby your cronies when you are done. And it's all still legal."
- Excerpt: "We need people in the legislature who fight for their constituents, not for the corporate interests that paid for them. We should institute a ban that will prevent anyone leaving State service from lobbying their branch of State government, directly or indirectly, for four-years after they leave. The current standard of two years just isn't enough. We should also permanently bar any State worker, and especially elected officials, from being lobbied by this former clients, firm or lobbyist associations when they are elected. This ban should also be extended to lobbying from former campaign staffers and lection [sic] consulting firms, and;"
Have Full Transparency in Hiring Relatives
- Excerpt: "We see this same story over and over. Elected official meets with special interest. Special interest hires a family member of the elected official for a no-show job. Special interest gets Sate contract or grant."
- Excerpt: "It may be illegal, but corporations are getting better at hiding it and it isn't always obvious. We can make things better by requiring that family members or former staff members of elected officials that work for nonprofits or businesses receiving State funding must be reported to the Attorney General's Office for oversight and that all such associations should be recorded and made available to the public, and;"
Invoke the NASCAR Rule
- Excerpt: "A new nonpartisan and independent office of Legislative Responsibility should be created. It will be charged with declaring to the public any corporate or special interests that will benefit from actions that specific legislators take, including votes on any bills, if they have received campaign contributions or any gifts from that special interest. A full list of all related parties should be appended to any bill that is voted on. While we can't stop campaign contributions, we can certainly ensure that everyone knows who has been bought and paid for."
