Philip Nelson is a former Illinois Director of Agriculture. He was appointed to this position by Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) on January 16, 2015, and confirmed by the Illinois Senate on March 19. Nelson succeeded Robert F. Flider in the position.[1][2] Nelson resigned on September 24, 2015; no official reason was given. Nelson was succeeded by Raymond Poe.[3][4]

Nelson is a fourth-generation farmer based outside of Seneca, Illinois. Besides running his grain and livestock farm, Nelson has supported the state agriculture industry through his leadership roles with companies and organizations such as the Illinois Agricultural Service Company and the IAA Foundation, of which he served as president, as well as the Coordinating Committee of GROWMARK, Inc.[1]

Before Nelson was tapped to head the state department of agriculture in 2015, he served as president of the Illinois Farm Bureau.[2]
