Philomath City Water Fluoridation Question (March 2012)
A Philomath City Water Fluoridation Question was on the March 13, 2012 ballot in the city of Philomath which is in Benton County.
This measure was approved
- YES 736 (59.02%)
- NO 511 (40.98%)[1]
This measure sought to allow the city to resume adding fluoride compounds to the potable water supply system in the city.[2] A meeting had been scheduled for Thursday February 23 to help inform voters about the ballot measure, the meeting was hosted by the group that was opposed to fluoridation in the water. Though proponents of fluoridation were also invited to present at the meeting, none had accepted to attend.[3]
The city has added fluoride to its water since the 1980s and only 38 other cities in the state add fluoride to their municipal water supplies. Those in favor of adding fluoride to the water system had raised more money for their campaign than those opposed to it. The group Citizens for Healthy Teeth was the main force behind the measure and had raised $3,739. Where as Fluoride Free Philomath, the group opposed, had only raised $915.[4]
