An effort to recall Phyliss Anderson from her position as chief of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians in Mississippi was launched in January 2017. Members of a group called Choctaw for Better Government cited employment discrimination and fiscal irresponsibility as the reasons for seeking a recall.[1] The recall did not go to a vote because the recall petition was not turned in by the deadline.[2]
Recall supporters
Nikki Comby, a member of Choctow for Better Government, said that Anderson was only giving jobs and pay raises to her supporters, while overlooking other candidates. "If it's only [Anderson] supporters who are getting jobs or supporters who are getting pay increases then we can put two and two together and realize it's not about the qualification," she said. They also accused Anderson of fiscal irresponsibility because she wanted to bring the Red Water casino up for another vote after it had been voted down twice. "Carthage may grow and Red Water casino may grow, but it will be at the risk of Neshoba casinos, which are ours. If anyone goes to Golden Moon now even on a busy night, it's still very empty," she said.[1]
Recall opponents
In response to the recall, Anderson said, "It's disappointing that now when so many wonderful things are occurring on the reservation a small group is trying to discredit the work." She said that there were more tribal members in management positions than before and the tribe's debt was lower than ever before.[1]
Path to the ballot
Recall proponents needed to collect signatures of 40 percent of the tribe's registered voters in order to have a special recall election.[1] The deadline to turn in the petition was in early March 2017. Since no petition was turned in, the recall effort ended.[2]
