The city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, held elections for city council on November 3, 2015. A primary took place on May 19, 2015. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was March 11, 2015. Five of the nine city council seats were up for election.[1]
A total of 12 candidates filed for the five seats up for election. Incumbents ran for re-election in each district, and all of them won their primary races. In District 1, Darlene Harris defeated Dave Schuilenburg in the general election. Schuilenburg filed to run against Harris in the Democratic primary but withdrew in March due to a family matter. He then filed to run in the general election with no party affiliation.[2] In all of the other districts, the incumbents were unopposed in the general election.[3]
Every candidate in Pittsburgh's 2015 municipal elections was a Democrat. As of 2015, the city had not elected a Republican — neither as mayor nor as a member of the council — since the 1930s.[4] Since the city government was dominated by Democrats, the contested races occured mostly during the primary. Though all but one incumbent faced at least one challenger in the Democratic primary, each won with a fairly comfortable lead.[5]
