Three seats on the Pittsylvania County Public Schools School Board were up for general election on November 5, 2013.

All three incumbents filed to run for re-election.[1] Board member Calvin Doss defeated challenger Linda Hagerman for the Callands-Gretna District seat, while both Banister District incumbent Charles Miller Jr. and Dan River District incumbent W. Neal Oakes ran unopposed and won re-election.

Pittsylvania County Public Schools is located in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. As of the 2010 Census, the county was home to 62,426 residents.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Pittsylvania County Public Schools was the 30th-largest school district in Virginia and served 9,245 students.[3]

Demographics

Pittsylvania County underperformed compared to the rest of Virginia in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 13.7 percent of Pittsylvania County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 35.2 percent for Virginia as a whole. The median household income in Pittsylvania County was $42,143 compared to $63,907 for the state of Virginia. The poverty rate in Pittsylvania County was 14.5 percent compared to 11.3 percent for the entire state.[2]

Method of board member selection

The Pittsylvania School Board consists of seven members elected by specific geographic district to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 5, 2013. Three seats were up for election in 2013.[1] After a change to the law in 2011, 2013 was the first year in which the school district held staggered elections for board members.[5]

School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which ended on June 11, 2013. The deadline to register to vote was October 15, 2013.[6]
