Police officer discrimination case dismissed by South Dakota judge
March 30, 2012
RAPID CITY, South Dakota: U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Viken has dismissed Glen Yellow Robe's claims of discrimination. Yellow Robe is a former Rapid City police and alcohol compliance officer. He was fired in 2007 due a conflict of interest with his wife's purchase of a liquor store. In 2009, Yellow Robe filed a lawsuit claiming age discrimination, racial discrimination and harassment.[1][2]
Yellow Robe said officers made fun of and criticized Native Americans during daily briefings. Judge Viken responded by saying,
- "At no time during his employment with the police department did Mr. Yellow Robe ever go to an officer of authority and suggest he had been a victim of racial harassment," and "By Mr. Yellow Robe's own admission, for years he was involved in racial antics in the police department."[1][2]
The defense was satisfied with the decision, saying "hopefully, we can all move on now."[1] - City Attorney Joel Landeen
