Port of Bellingham Commissioner Increase Question (November 2012)
A Port of Bellingham Commissioner Increase Question was on the November 6, 2012 ballot in Whatcom County.
This measure seeks to expand the current port commission by two members, leading to a total of five members, which would also redistrict the county into five commission districts. Originally the two extra commissioners were going to be at-large seats, meaning they would represent the entire county, but the idea was later proposed to just redistrict the county to suit five members. The Board approved this measure for the ballot on June 19. Though the current commissioners noted that they would not have expanded the commission on their own, strong public support for two more members encouraged them to place the issue on the ballot. The commissioners noted that if the measure is approved, an addition of $150,000 per year would be added to current expenses to pay for the new commissioners.[1]
