A Portland School District Levy Increase measure was on the May 17, 2011 ballot in the Portland school district area which is in both Clackamas and Multnomah Counties.
This measure was approved overall.
Clackamas
- YES 51 (49.51%)
- NO 52 (50.49%)

- YES 69,027 (58.21%)

This measure sought to increase the current property tax rate by $.74 per $1,000 of assessed property value making it a total of $1.99. A bond issue was also being asked by the district, but they felt that not enough money would be raised so they asked for additional funds through this tax increase. The money from this increase will be used to supplement the district operations budget as well as upgrade buildings as needed. The tax increase is expected to raise near $57 million a year for the districts uses.[3]
The main beneficiary of this added money will be the teachers of the school district, the school district noted that two budgets had been worked up if the measure was approved or defeated.[4]
Media Endorsements
The Portland Tribune had noted its support for this measure, along with the Portland bond measure, stating that without this tax increase around 500 teacher jobs are at risk. The district expects to lose money from the state so this levy will make up that expected deficit. Without this the schools will struggle and will not be beneficial to students and though the increased tax burden was still an issue, the student's needs were seen as important.[5]
