Preet Bharara is a former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. He was appointed by President Barack Obama (D) and unanimously confirmed in 2009. He joined the NYU School of Law in 2017 as a distinguished scholar in residence after being dismissed by the Trump administration.[1][2]

Biography

Bharara graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1990 with a degree in government. He received his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1993. He started his legal career as a litigation associate at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher from 1993 to 1996 and Swidler Berlin Shereff Friedman from 1996 to 2000.[1]

He served as the assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2000 to 2005, before heading to Washington, D.C., to work as a top aide to Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee's oversight subcommittee.[3]

President Barack Obama (D) nominated Bharara for U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York on May 15, 2009. He was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 7, 2009. As U.S. attorney, Bharara formed the Terrorism and International Narcotics Unit, which prosecuted al-Qaeda leader Sulaiman Abu Ghayth, London imam Abu Hamza, and Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad. Bharara served in this role until 2017, when the Trump administration dismissed him.[1][2]

He began working as a distinguished scholar in residence at the NYU School of Law in 2017.[2]
