Prentis Edwards
Prentis Edwards was a judge of the 3rd Circuit Court in Wayne County, Michigan. He was originally appointed in 1985 to the Detroit Recorder's Court, which was merged with the 3rd Circuit Court in 1997.[1] He has served on the Circuit Court since 1994 and was re-elected in 2000 and 2006.[2][3] He retired from the court at the end of his term, on January 1, 2013.[4][5][6]
Education
Edwards received her B.A. and J.D. degrees from Wayne State University in 1960 and 1965, respectively.[4]
Career
Edwards began his career in 1966 as a staff attorney for the Wayne County Friend of the Court. He became a Supervising Attorney for the Community Legal Counsel in 1968 and became an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Wayne County the following year. He worked as a private practice lawyer from 1972 to 1976 and as Register and Chief Referee for the Wayne County Juvenile Court from 1976 to 1983. He then joined the 36th District Court (Criminal Division), where he served as the Presiding Judge prior to his appointment to the Recorder's Court in 1985. He joined the circuit court in 1994 and served until 2012.[4]
Awards and associations
Edwards has served as a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Wayne County Bar Association, the Association of Black Judges, the Michigan Judges Association. He has also served as the chairman of the Grant Schools Scholarship Fund, a board member of the Sickle Cell Information Center, a mentor at the Isuthu Institute, a NAACP member, and an elder of Fellowship Chapel Church.[4]
