American Samoa does not cast electoral votes for the president of the United States. It does, however, hold Democratic caucuses and a territorial convention for the Republican Party. American Samoa held Democratic caucuses on March 1, 2016. The Republican territorial convention took place on March 22, 2016.

Hillary Clinton won the territory's Democratic caucuses, winning 162 votes to Bernie Sanders' 61. Clinton won American Samoa's Democratic caucuses in 2008 as well.[1] The 2016 Democratic caucuses in American Samoa took place at one location. Clinton called the site the day of the caucus. A Clinton spokesperson told Politico, "[Clinton] reminded voters of her visit to the territory as Secretary of State, she thanked American Samoans for their notable record of serving in the U.S. armed forces and explained how, as President, she would ensure veterans get the care and support they deserve, no matter where they live. She also highlighted her commitment to breaking down barriers and building ladders of opportunity for the people of American Samoa — specifically citing her commitment to raise incomes and tackle the epidemic of substance abuse."[2]

On March 22, 2016, Republicans in American Samoa gathered to select nine delegates to attend the Republican National Convention in July in Cleveland. The territory did not hold a presidential preference poll. All of American Samoa's Republican delegates were "unpledged," meaning they were not pledged to support a specific candidate at the national convention. A list of the selected delegates can be found below. According to a press release from the Republican Party of American Samoa, the event on March 22 was "one of the best-attended" conventions in American Samoa's history.[3]
