Guam does not cast electoral votes for the president of the United States. It does, however, participate in the Democratic and Republican presidential nominating processes.
Guam held a Republican territorial convention on March 12, 2016. Five of the territory's six Republican delegates were elected as unpledged delegates. Ted Cruz won the other delegate. Mitt Romney won the Republican territorial convention in 2012.
The Democratic caucuses took place on May 7, 2016. Hillary Clinton defeated Bernie Sanders, 60 to 40 percent. Clinton won four of Guam's seven pledged Democratic delegates, plus the territory's five superdelegates.[1] Barack Obama won the Democratic caucuses in 2008.
In 1980, Guam began holding a non-binding straw poll for president on the day of the general election. The winner of every Guam straw poll between 1980 and 2012 went on to win the presidency.[2] Hillary Clinton won in 2016.
Straw poll
Hillary Clinton won the territory's straw poll vote for president on November 8, 2016, with 72 percent of the vote. Donald Trump received 24 percent of the vote. In total, 32,071 ballots were cast.[3]
