Puerto Rico does not cast electoral votes for the president of the United States. It does, however, participate in the Democratic and Republican presidential nominating processes. Puerto Rico held Republican primary elections on March 6, 2016. The Democratic caucuses took place on June 5, 2016.
Hillary Clinton won the Puerto Rico Democratic caucuses. Clinton also won the territory in 2008, defeating Barack Obama 68 to 32 percent.[1]
Marco Rubio won the Puerto Rico 2016 Republican primary with more than 70 percent of the vote.[2] Donald Trump came in second with 13.8 percent. Because Rubio received more than 50 percent of the vote, he was awarded all 23 of the territory's pledged delegates. Rubio was the only Republican candidate to campaign in the territory in person. He held a rally outside the city of San Juan on March 5, 2016.[3] Rubio's victory in Puerto Rico marked his second outright win in the Republican presidential nominating process. He won the Minnesota caucus on March 1, 2016. Mitt Romney won the Republican primary in Puerto Rico in 2012.
