Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island: Today in Providence, the race for City Council Ward 9 will be decided. The seat was held by Councilman Miguel Luna, he suffered a heart attack in August and left the seat vacant. The two candidates are Carmen Castillo (D) and Christian Chirino (R), both would be new to the office. The City Council is dominated by Democrats, so the Democratic candidate is expected to win. Though the Republicans voiced their support for their candidate, noting that there has been little debate between the two candidates. Republicans cite a large budget deficit, $180 million, and the long running of the city by Democrats as the reason for change in the city.[1]
