An effort in Kansas City, Missouri, to recall Mayor Quinton Lucas was initiated in August 2020. Recall organizers failed to gather enough signatures to put the recall election on the ballot.[1]

Recall supporters
The recall effort was organized by resident Brad Sarver. In the recall petition, Sarver accused Lucas of "poor judgment and inadequate leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and civic unrest the occurred and continues in 2020."[2]
Recall opponents
A spokesperson for Lucas gave a statement in response to the recall effort. The statement read, "The mayor is proud of his office’s decisive response to COVID-19, which has saved lives and kept our community safer and healthier than other peer-sized cities. As he has during his one year in office, Mayor Lucas will continue to work hard each day for all Kansas Citians, and will not be distracted by divisive anti-mask, partisan politics."[3]

Petitions were filed with the city clerk on August 20, 2020.[2] Petitioners needed to gather 13,700 signatures in 30 days for the recall election to be put on the ballot.[3]
Ballotpedia covered 35 coronavirus-related recall efforts against 94 officials in 2022, accounting for 13% of recalls that year. This is a decrease from both 2020 and 2021. COVID-related recalls accounted for 37% of all recall efforts in both 2020 and 2021. In 2020, there were 87 COVID-related recalls against 89 officials, and in 2021, there were 131 against 214 officials.
