Elections
2014
R. Alexander Fitzhugh, Jesse Cunningham and Pia Bhatti lost to District 9 incumbent Thad Mayfield and newcomer Vickie B. Turner for the District 5 seat in the general election on May 20, 2014. Although the District 5 seat normally carries a four-year term, this election was for a two-year term.[1]
Cunningham was the District 5 member of the board from 2006 to February 2013. He was removed from office by Governor Nathan Deal after an audit conducted by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools revealed issues with board governance, unethical practices and fiscal mismanagement. This led to the district being placed under "accredited probation" status.[2][3] Governor Deal appointed Mayfield to replace Cunningham as the District 5 representative.[4]
