Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in South Carolina

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Suspended from state House after indictment on charges of child sexual abuse material (2025)

May was charged with 10 counts of distributing child sexual abuse material according to federal documents unsealed on June 12, 2025. The charges were in connection to an investigation by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.[2] In accordance with state law, House Speaker G. Murrell Smith Jr. (R) suspended May from the House shortly after he was indicted.[3][4] As of June 12, 2025, May's attorney had not released a comment on the charges.[5]

On August 11, 2025, May resigned from state legislature, saying, "I have decided that it is in the best interest of my family and constituents to resign immediately from the South Carolina House of Representatives. Please accept this letter as my formal resignation from the South Carolina House of Representatives. It has been an honor to serve the people of District 88."[6]

On September 26, 2025, May signed a plea agreement to change his plea from not guilty to guilty on five counts.[7] The prosecution agreed to drop the other five counts.[8] In a subsequent hearing on September 29, the plea was formally processed.[8] His sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 14, 2026.[8]
