I grew up surrounded by education and service. Both my parents were public school teachers, and they were both volunteers and public servants, from Sunday School classrooms and teen homeless shelters to the Chanhassen Parks & Recreation Commission and beyond. I have followed my family’s model of servant leadership, budgeting for nonprofits’ finances and volunteering as a leader, teacher, and mentor. I have also lived my entire life in education, both inside and outside the classroom. I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to blend this call to service with my dedication to public education.
  • Destination District: My long-term vision for Eastern Carver County Schools is that we will remain a district that attracts families like mine. We will provide opportunities for every student to have the specific supports they need in order to find success. And we will support our staff at every level to make sure that happens.
  • Transparent Budgeting: While district staff lead the budget process, I would still advocate for–and be an active part of–community engagement before any major budget decisions are brought to the board for approval. Gathering data and listening to as many stakeholders as possible is essential in any long-term funding discussions. These have the potential to be incredibly difficult conversations and even harder decisions. Listening actively in order to align feedback from different groups is imperative in developing a path forward.
  • Equity for All: From the number of mental health professionals per capita in our schools and the resources allocated for our district staff, to the opportunities we are affording all our scholars, we need to ensure that Eastern Carver County Schools remains a district focused on the inclusion that is inherent with true equity work.
In this nonpartisan race for a seat on our district's school board, we do not have to answer to any party or interest groups. Instead, we get to focus on the public policy that will most significantly impact the students, teachers, and staff in our buildings. This means ensuring we have policies that keep our students safe, that we are providing teachers and administrators with the time and the training they need to do their jobs to the best of their abilities, and that we continue to create physical infrastructure that will ensure our learners are safe and cared for.
I grew up with two teachers who served more than a combined 70 years in the classroom. I worked on Capitol Hill for a nonpartisan agency, communicating with Congress on both sides of the aisle. I worked in the nonprofit sector before becoming a teacher myself. I taught high school English in Baltimore until my son was born, when I founded what has since grown into a thriving communications firm. I am the proud parent of two ECCS students and a former host parent to teachers from Spain and El Salvador. I also worked with two ECCS teachers to create a program that connects 7th graders with local veterans. This combination of communication skills, classroom experience, business savvy and life experiences sets me apart.
Providing a quality public education is one of the greatest responsibilities of a modern democracy. It is our job to ensure that every student enrolled in Eastern Carver County Schools receives the best possible public education we can provide. Every single student in our classrooms is gifted and every single one of those students has unique needs. By equipping teachers and building staff with the tools and time they need, we can help ensure that all those gifts flourish and the needs are met.
