Candidate Connection

Rachel Stansberry completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Stansberry's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Education-supporting public education Economy-building strong communities by supporting Economy Earth-stewardship for our land and water.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Health Care-we need a system that works. We need to keep the overall cost down and make health care accessible and affordable. We nee rural health care. We need mental health care. We need to be sure people with preexisting conditions can get health care coverage.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My father was an WWII Veteran and worked as an attorney in the US Dept of Justice for 50 years. He was extremely ethical and non-partisan. He worked until he was 89 and instilled in me a work ethic and a willingness to look deeply and understand all sides of an issue or argument.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

The ability to communicate and resolve conflicts for the greater good.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I love Montana and its people.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

I think you have to be fiscally responsible with tax dollars and uphold the Montana Constitution.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I'd like my children and grandchildren to have the opportunities that I have had on public lands: walking, hiking, fishing, hunting, skiing, and just being outside in nature.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The assassination of JFK. I was 3 years old. We lived outside of Washington, D.C. and it was just before Thanksgiving.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Delivering the Washington Post. I think I had this job for 2 years.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

A person has to start somewhere. I think people who don't have experience bring knowledge from their own experiences and their communities. I think this is valuable to representing a district.

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

Sources of Revenue and a rising gap between the rich and poor.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?

They have to work together for the common good of the citizens of our state.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Yes. I think building relationships helps us better understand each other and make value based decisions.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

No

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

I spoke with a constituent who is now 100 years old. He served in the legislature in 1951. He told me of the companies that had power at that time and it reminded me of what is going on now. He ended by saying 'don't give up.'.
