The Ramah Judicial District Court is a tribal court in Ramah, New Mexico.[1]
As of February 2021, the Ramah Judicial District was one of 11 trial-level judicial districts that made up the Navajo Nation court system.[2]
About tribal courts
There were approximately 400 tribal courts in the United States as of 2021, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior.[3] These courts can hear both criminal and civil cases regarding tribal code. Tribes that do not establish their own court may use a regional Court of Indian Offenses. These are also known as CFR Courts, since they were established by the Code of Federal Regulations.[4]
Jurisdiction
The Ramah Judicial District is in New Mexico, south of the main portion of the Navajo Reservation. It is not contiguous with the rest of the reservation, as represented by the number 4 on this map.[5]
History
The Ramah Judicial District was formed as part of the original division of the Navajo Nation into seven judicial districts.[6]
