Judges of the New York Family Courts all serve 10-year terms but their method of selection varies based on location. Outside of New York City, they are selected through partisan contested elections. In New York City, they are appointed by the mayor. To serve on this court, a judge must be a state and county resident, at least 18 years old and practice in the state for 10 years. This court has a mandatory retirement age of 70 years old.[4]
