Campaign themes
2016
Burris' campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]
Education
- Excerpt: "Randal opposes vouchers/ESAs/private charter schools that take more money away from public schools. He opposed SB 1187, the bill that would, in the name of "flexibility", allow school districts to eliminate the teacher minimum salary schedule, eliminate school district health insurance, ELIMINATE CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR SCHOOL EMPLOYEES, eliminate participation in the Oklahoma Teacher's Retirement System, and so on."
- Excerpt: "Rather than investing the State's money in a gold and silver bullion depository, as some have suggested, we need to invest in the real treasure, our children. We need to invest in the future. We need to invest in our public schools, technical schools, and universities. A well-educated populace is the surest way to attract the stable, good-paying jobs that will grow our economy."
Infrastructure
- Excerpt: "Randal will fight for stronger action on man-made earthquakes. If elected, Randal promises to vote to ban the importation of waste water from other States. But this addresses only a fraction of the problem. Randal will push for more aggressive action by the Corporation Commission against those who have been identified as contributing to the induced seismicity in the State. He will push for tougher inspections of our roads, bridges, and pipelines after a seismic event, and for increased public assistance for those who, through no fault of their own, have been victims of these events, and who have suffered damage to their homes and businesses."
- Excerpt: "Randal will oppose balancing the budget by depleting funds for roads and bridges. In recent years, the State Legislature has raided funds set aside for maintenance of our roads and bridges to help address the deficit crisis created by their tax cuts and corporate tax giveaways. To make up the difference, the governor has proposed hundreds of millions of dollars of bonds, new debt the State will have to repay, to maintain our infrastructure. Randal believes this short-sided approach is harmful in the long run. He supports common-sense budget proposals to maintain enough in our ROADS fund, to eliminate excessive corporate tax rebates, and to reverse the automatic tax cut triggers that helped create the current crisis."
Healthcare
- Excerpt: "Randal supports accepting Medicaid Expansion funds. Whether you like "Obama-care" or hate it, refusing to bring tens of millions of tax dollars that we Oklahomans send to Washington back here to aid the "least among us" is both foolish and short-sided. We don't do that with any other Federal program for which we qualify: we don't refuse Federal road funds from the current administration, we don't refuse Federal disaster help after a tornado or a flood. Why then do we refuse to accept Federal dollars, money WE sent to Washington, to assist our fellow Oklahomans who otherwise have no access to affordable health care?"
