Campaign themes

2018

Gonce's campaign website stated the following:

  • Real Affordable Housing

Hawaiʻi needs REAL affordable housing. Currently 'affordable housing' still looks like homes starting at $700,000. This is out of the range for working families, young adults, and our kupuna on fixed incomes.

We need to make sure that every resident has equal access to housing. For starters we must close the loophole for developers to pay a fee in order to get out of building affordable housing when constructing new projects. We have enough million dollar condominiums in town.

  • Quality Education

We need to be supporting our teachers, schools, and working toward debt-free education for our residents.

Hawaiʻi’s teachers deserve a living wage that allows them to thrive, not just scrape by. These same teachers should have autonomy in their classrooms untying their hands from teaching unrealistic standards, standardized testing goals, and other one-size-fits-all standards that fail to meet our students needs.

  • Addressing our Houseless

We need real measurable solutions for our houseless population. Homeless sweeps and the criminalization of our houseless population are aggravating the problem and lead to more issues. It burdens our prison/jails, our courts, and makes the tax payer pay for these services. With a large population of our residents just one paycheck away from being on the street this is an issue that needs leaders.

  • Supporting Working Families

The State of Hawaiʻi has a tax structure that weighs heavier on our working class residents than those at the top of the economic ladder. Our middle and lower classes are struggling to make ends meet and each year that this goes by unaddressed or with marginal assistance is another year families struggle. Many working families are one emergency or loss of a paycheck away from poverty and houselessness.

I have worked on things in the past such as a state Working Families Tax Credit (state EITC), trying to lift taxes on food & medical supplies, paid family leave, collective bargaining rights for graduate students, increasing the renters credit, and much more. We have had little to no success on these issues but there is a dire need for all of them.

As someone who has been a working class worker my whole life I know that we need leaders who are willing to push these initiatives to assist working families.[1]

2016

Gonce's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Schools and Education:

  • If elected, obtaining more funding for schools such as James Campbell High School will be a top priority. JCHS needs an expansion to upgraded facilities to better provide cohesive learning conditions to students. Teachers also need their classrooms back. Currently, due to overcrowding, some teachers have to load up a cart and walk the halls between classes jumping around to teach in different areas of the school. As an educator myself, I know what it means to have ownership over a classroom, curricula, and teaching climate. Teachers need their classrooms in order to maximize their effectiveness. This is a serious issue that is affecting our students and faculty on a daily basis. Securing funds for JCHS that gives adequate space and resources will be a great step towards the betterment of our public education.

Traffic, Roads, and Infrastucture:

  • The traffic in West Oahu is an issue of quality of life and will be a top priority. We should be spending more time with our families and enjoying the beauty of our islands but often times we find ourselves inside our vehicles commuting. With strong leadership and bold innovative alternatives we can make the commute to West Oahu efficient and pleasant.

Military and Veterans:

  • I am opposed to a reduction of force or military here in Hawaii. I am not opposed to cuts on military spending, budget, fraud, waste, abuse, and using that revenue for infrastructure here at home. We spend more than all countries in the world combined on our military and we have no major enemy. The trillions of dollars spent on disastrous regime change operations and other unnecessary foreign policies put our military members lives at stake for political goals. This money needs to be invested at home into schools, jobs, roads, bridges, etc. and to help take care of those who are returning from fighting these wars.

Environment, Conservation, and Sustainability:

  • There is no greater threat to life on this planet today more so than climate change. The scientific community around the world is in overwhelming agreement that climate change is happening, it is caused and excelled by human activity, and if we do not act now we will face very serious consequences in the future.
  • Protecting our environment by implementing renewable energy, divesting from fossil fuels, and passing legislation that protects what we have left is paramount to life on this planet succeeding.[1]
