Rashad Turner was a 2016 Democratic candidate for District 65A of the Minnesota House of Representatives.
2016
Turner's campaign website highlighted the following issues:
“

Education:
- With the opportunity gap continuing to grow we need legislation that will help our schools to hire a more diverse teaching force. Teachers from surrounding states should not have to have their education and licenses they have earned in other states disregarded in the state of Minnesota.
- Free developmental courses throughout the MNSCU system- Today’s college students are spending their financial aid dollars at a lightning fast pace. Students in the MNSCU system are forced to pay for developmental courses which they receive no college credit for. Legislation should be passed in this area that would allow students to complete all required developmental courses for FREE. This legislation would keep students from exhausting their financial aid before completing their degree.
- End high stakes testing, so that our teachers can do what they love to do… TEACH. In addition to the end of high stakes testing which force teachers to teach to a standardized test that is culturally inequitable, legislation is also needed to ensure that school districts have an equitable and objective way of evaluating teachers for tenure.
Criminal Justice:
- End police brutality, mass incarceration and institutional racism within our justice system. Expand women’s rights, protect LGBTQ people from discrimination, defend indigenous rights and lands, and create a welcoming path to citizenship for immigrants. Protect the free Internet, replace drug prohibition with harm reduction, and legalize marijuana.
- Restore the vote! Throughout history a lot of work has been done by a lot of people to ensure the voting rights of marginalized people. Now we must continue to fight to restore the vote of previously convicted felons who have paid their debt to society.
- End the Grand Jury process in Minnesota. Far too often we see Police Officers taint departments with their misconduct, however, less often to never do we see Police Officers held accountable through the Grand Jury. Ending the Grand Jury process would force prosecutors to prosecute police officers in the same way they criminally prosecute civilians.
- End unconstitutional surveillance and unwarranted spying.
Minimum Wage:
- $9.50 is not enough for a person to adequately care for their own well being let alone take care of their children and other dependents. The cost of living wage is nearly double the current minimum wage amount, however, a $15 minimum wage would enable individuals and family units to move from a life where they struggle to survive, to a life where they can thrive.
Veterans:
- There’s no question that we need to do better for our veterans in the form of health care, financial support, and reacclimation to life as a civilian. We can no longer treat our veterans as if their service to our country is only valued while they are on the battlefield. Our Veterans need to know that when they come home they will have the support they need in order to thrive when they return home.[1]
