Bhalla filed to run in the 2013 election for New Jersey General Assembly District 33, but withdrew prior to the primary election.[1] Bhalla was opposed by John Hilt IV, Anthony Mills, Raj Mukherji, and Peter Basso in the June 4 Democratic primary. The general election took place on November 5, 2013.

Bhalla was a candidate for the 2011 Democratic Party nomination for District 33 of the New Jersey General Assembly. Bhalla was defeated by incumbent Ruben Ramos, Jr. and Sean Connors in the June 7 primary. Ramos and Connors were running bracketed together.[2][3]
