Interview with Missouri Independent

Ray Hartmann highlighted the following themes in an interview with Missouri Independent on March 15, 2024. Text from the Missouri Independent article follows below.[2]

In an interview Friday with The Independent, Hartmann said he’s running to make abortion rights the foremost issue in the campaign. Abortion has been illegal in Missouri since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that recognized a constitutional right to abortion.

“This is the first general election since the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, and I would most definitely vote, if given the opportunity, to return to restore nationally Roe v. Wade protections for women,” Hartmann said. “And I think it’s fair to say that the Congresswoman would vote in the opposite direction.”

He won’t be a single-issue candidate, Hartmann said. Wagner isn’t doing enough to make sure federal taxes paid by residents of the district returns to fund projects and programs in the district.

“She voted against the infrastructure bill, for example,” Hartmann said. “I will fight for infrastructure and anything else we can to get our fair share of what we pay in the district. I think that will resonate all over the district.” [3]

Interview with St. Louis Public Radio

Ray Hartmann highlighted the following themes in an interview with St. Louis Public Radio on March 14, 2024. Text from the St. Louis Public Radio article follows below.[4]

Hartmann said he presents a clear choice for voters on issues like abortion rights. He expects high interest in that issue, especially if activists are able to collect enough signatures to get a constitutional amendment legalizing the procedure on the August or November ballot.

“Women's freedom is clearly on the ballot. And in a race like this in the 2nd District, there'll be a real clear-cut choice on that issue,” Hartmann said. “I would certainly vote in Congress to codify Roe v. Wade as the law of the land. I don't speak for Ann Wagner, I think it's pretty clear she'd be voting in the opposite direction.”

Wagner is opposed to abortion rights with exceptions in the cases of rape or incest or to save the life of the mother.

While Wagner is a “really good person,” Hartmann said, she has “consistently enabled Donald Trump.” If Trump returns to the White House next year, Hartmann said he would do a better job of holding him accountable.

“We need a Congress that will not enable him,” Hartmann said. [3]
