My family memories are full of Adams 12 snapshots. I remember meeting fellow parents at my first son's elementary school and feeling like it was a safe community. I remember my sons' best fiends, favorite teachers, and many treasured school field trips. Fast forward 26 years, it is my youngest two son's first day of school as a junior and middle schooler. I am still excited for the experiences and opportunities that are before them.
  • Budget transparency- we must find ways to overcome our $7 million deficit
  • Mental health- mental health crises are at an all time high, and we must incorporate parents and reevaluate support strategies for our kids
  • School safety- we need to ensure the measures we have against internal and external threats are effective and accountable
I'm passionate about education policy as it relates to mental health and parental engagement. I believe that parents are crucial partners in the educational process. I'm passionate about fostering greater parent engagement and ensuring that parents have a meaningful voice in the decisions that affect not only their children's education, but the mental health and other support they may need along their educational journey.
The first historical event I remember was the announcement over the school intercom telling us that there was an assassination attempt on President Regan. This was March 30, 1981.
I actually had two first jobs- one at McDonalds, and one as a secretary at a real estate office. I had them both as soon as I turned 16. I maintained these jobs for more than a year, then moved to another administrative position. Both jobs were necessary as personal circumstances made it necessary for me to become emancipated. Managing high school, two jobs, and life responsibilities taught me at a young age to become a survivor. I want to pay it forward to help kids overcome personal challenges to succeed.
A school board member must uphold, review, and approve policies that run the district. It is the responsibility of the board to provide over-view and accountability of the superintendent and district administration. Along with these responsibilities, the board must review, approve, bring the district into compliance with regulatory and curriculum mandates.
My constituents are the residents and stakeholders in Adams 12, with a focus on my district, No. 2.
Adams 12 has the newly implemented ELEVATE initiative that I believe deserve support with close review and accountability to assure it is meeting the need within the district.
It is important to continue to support communication avenues that already exist and are successful. These avenues should continue to be supported and nurtured. I believe it is also important to specifically reach out to additional stakeholders who rely employees who are well educated, whether through a a robust high school curriculum, a certification through one of our CTE programs, or a future student who will graduate from a college program. I believe we must invite these employers to be invested in our students' successes.
I would like to see apprenticeships and opportunities in the CTE field expand into partnerships with our cities.
Our five cities have sizable departments and staff to maintain city vehicles, roads, facilities, and other property for example. We have Thornton, Federal Heights, Northglenn, Westminster, and Broomfield that are at least partly in the district, and that we can reach out to along with our business community.
We must as a board never be comfortable with implementing safety in school. We must never assume, "it can't happen in our schools." I believe it is important to fortify the accountable measures that are working, and from each school, create a plan to bring each school into district safety compliance. If there are additional safety concerns identified by the schools, those concerns need to be addressed and prioritized to mitigate.
Building new relationships, maintaining relationships, and re-building relationships and trust with parents in the district is essential. I believe as a board we can do this by providing increased opportunities for face-to-face interactions. This should be an priority item on the board's planning agendas. I believe this can be achieved by planned visits coordinated with schools throughout the district.
