Rebecca Kourlis
Rebecca Love Kourlis is a former justice of the Colorado Supreme Court. She was appointed on July 17, 1995 and served the court until January 2006, when she left the bench to form the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System.[1][2][3]
She is the co-author of the book "Rebuilding Justice: Civil Courts in Jeopardy and Why You Should Care," published in 2011.[4]
Education
Justice Kourlis received her Bachelor of Arts with distinction from Stanford University in 1973 and earned her J.D. from Stanford University School of Law in 1976.[1]
Professional career
Justice Kourlis joined the law firm Davis, Graham and Stubbs from 1976 to 1978 shortly after passing the bar. She then worked part time for the firm Gibson, Dunn, and Crutcher from 1981 to 1986. She also began a private practice in Craig, CO from 1978 to 1987. In 1987 Kourlis was appointed to the Colorado 14th Judicial District Circuit Court, a position she served until 1994. She became Chief Justice of that court from 1991 to 1994. She also served as a Water Judge for Division 6 in Colorado from 1988 until 1994. She worked as an Arbiter for the Judicial Arbiter Group Inc. from 1994 until her appointment to the Supreme Court in July of 1995. She held her position as a Supreme Court Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court from July 1995 until January 2009 when she resigned to found the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System.[1][2]
