Jamestown is my hometown. I have lived here for over 30 years, from birth through the end of high school and then after college and living elsewhere in the state for work. I have served on Town Council for three terms, and am currently mayor pro tem. My strong connection to my hometown, together with my passion for ensuring that individuals’ voices are heard by their elected officials and a desire to keep Jamestown the quaint and beautiful place it is for my daughter’s generation, plus the wisdom and experience gathered from serving three terms on the town council compel me to run for mayor of Jamestown.
  • *I have served citizens well over years and in many capacities.* Beyond my service on Town Council, I am also liaison to the Parks and Recreation Committee, vice chair of the Old Jamestown School Association (Jamestown Public Library) board, co-leader of Girl Scout Troop 30066 (housed at Jamestown United Methodist Church), a lifetime member of the Historic Jamestown Society, and a member of the Friends of the Jamestown Public Library. I am a former council liaison to the town Planning Board, treasurer of the Jamestown Elementary School PTA, and a board member and leader with numerous other community-focused organizations. I have given far more service to Jamestown than my opponents.
  • *My connections with citizens, staff, and volunteers ensure I can do the job starting on Day 1.* I have solid working relationships with town staff and fellow council members, as well as a lifetime worth of connections with neighbors and local organizations and businesses, since this is my hometown. I have earned the respect of community members and town partners through my history of volunteerism and on-the-ground involvement with residents.
  • *My vision for Jamestown's future aligns with the majority of our citizens.* Being a town leader requires being able to understand and balance many issue areas and interests, from taking care of critical infrastructure to encouraging civic engagement to ensuring excellent constituent services. Longtime residents and new neighbors, alike, talk about the town's superior services--like our continual leaf removal throughout the fall--and amenities such as the newly opened, accessible Jamestown Park playground and miles of sidewalks, as reasons they love living here. I believe these are some of the many features that make Jamestown the charming and quaint community that we all enjoy.
*I have a passion for bringing more citizens into the work of what makes Jamestown such a wonderful place to live.* Whether that is demystifying how Town Council makes decisions through workshops, offering office hours to discuss ideas and concerns, bringing new people to boards and committees (whether with the town government or one of our local nonprofit and civic organizations) through programs like the town's Citizen Academy, or building up local "third places" where people feel welcome, I want to ensure that every citizen knows that they have a role and a home here.
Honesty, connection to their constituents, a strong understanding of how local government works, respect (both for and from those they work with and on behalf of), the ability to make people feel heard, and an overall positive attitude
The main roles of the Mayor are to lead public meetings, vote in the event of a tie, and to serve as the point person for the Town Council.
I want the people around me, especially my daughter, to feel empowered to make their corner of the world a better place. It doesn't require taking giant, sweeping actions that completely change the world. Most often, it is quiet, consistent work that leads to the most lasting change.
I believe that means maintaining positive working relationships with town staff and fellow council members, as well as being an ambassador and spokesperson for the town.
I believe the mayor has a role, with Council, in overseeing the Town Manager to ensure that everything is running smoothly, internally. Beyond this and the aforementioned responsibilities of the job, I believe the mayor should serve as a positive and knowledgeable public figure who strives to bring the community together for the benefit of all.
Jamestown is my home. My past, future, and so many people and places that I love are here. It would be impossible to pick just one thing, but the feeling that I get when I come home and know that I am surrounded by a strong and welcoming community is wonderful.
Certainly, there is pressure for growth in our area, especially in neighboring large cities. It will be vital for Jamestown to retain our small-town feel and individuality while also understanding the realities of increased housing--primarily along the edge of town. We will also need to continue to be fiscally responsible in preparation for large and necessary infrastructure projects on the horizon, such as a new fire station and our share of an enhanced water treatment plant.
We could also greatly benefit from increased involvement from new and current residents with the volunteer organizations that have been responsible for so much of what has made Jamestown great for generations.
I believe each level of government serves a particular purpose and am not keen to overstep those boundaries unless absolutely necessary. It is beneficial to everyone for city and state officials to maintain positive working relationships with one another so that we can all do the best to serve our citizens. Having these connections and keeping state-level officials aware of our community's needs has proven to be especially helpful when it comes to funding large projects in town.
I believe our job as local officials is to ensure solid, two-way communication with federal elected officials and their staff to better understand how legislation may impact us, as well as be aware of and have advocates for funding opportunities that could benefit Jamestown.
Maintaining our excellent working relationship with the Guilford County Sheriff's office is vital for our future. Our residents appreciate having a substation in town and the deputies' quick response time in emergencies. We have had success partnering with local law enforcement for the types of activities that make our citizens feel safe, like increased visibility of deputies throughout our neighborhoods and their presence at community events like Jamestown Elementary School's 100th day of school celebration and Music in the Park.
