Recount underway in Pennsylvania
June 1, 2011
Pennsylvania: An automatic recount of votes for the Democratic primary race for the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court started last month. The Secretary of the Commonwealth Carol Aichele ordered the county election boards to start recounting the votes, as commonwealth law determines that a recount must occur if the difference between votes received by candidates is less than one-half of one percent.[1][2]
The only way to prevent a recount from starting is if the trailing candidate drops out of the race. Barbara Ernsberger had no intention of that, stating, "I believe the legislature put the recount mechanism in here so that everyone knows the results. There can be mistakes in counting, and this recognizes a race this close should be recounted."[1] But her opponent, Kathryn Boockvar, does not agree with that assessment. Though leading by only 2,116 votes after the primary results were tallied, she expressed her opinion that allowing it to go forward would only serve to waste a lot of taxpayer money.[1]
The county boards need to report the results by June 8, 2011.[1]
