The qualities that I possess that would make me a successful officeholder include honesty, respect, and loyalty. I am knowledgeable of city operations yet, I am inquisitive about new practices and policies. I am also approachable, energetic, and polite.
The core responsibilities for someone elected to this office include knowledge of city government and its operations (specifically the City of Winston-Salem). It is important that the person elected to this office is familiar with the roles and functions of City Departments and has a deep understanding on how government works at the local level and how different it is from state and federal government. The person elected to this office is responsible for meeting with citizens and keeping them informed of city matters that (directly and indirectly) affect them. They also have a responsibility to think about innovative ways to solve city issues and build public-private partnerships to maximize impact and resources when/where needed. The top responsibility is to listen to citizens and work hard to address their concerns.
My very first job out of College was with the City of Winston-Salem. I was employed by the City of Winston-Salem for approximately eight years.
City Council Members are in charge of adopting a budget set forth by the City Manager. A lot of the budget involves decisions on whether or not taxes will be increased to cover the costs of good, services, and operations offered by the City of Winston-Salem (including stormwater and sewer), garbage collection, recycling, yard waste, and public safety (police patrolling, etc.).
It is beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience working for the City of Winston-Salem. As a previous employee of the City of Winston-Salem, I know (far too well) about the decisions that Council Member makes and the effects/affects it has on current city employees.
Knowledge of city government and its operations (specifically the City of Winston-Salem). Experience working with a diverse constituencies including children, teenagers, young adults, middle age adults, seniors (ages 65 and better), justice-involved/returning citizens (etc.)

Government is an institute of public trust. It must be protected and maintained at all times. Financial transparency and government accountability can co-exist - particularly with concepts and initiatives such as participatory budgeting with local citizens.
