I'm running for re-election to the Michigan State House because I want to continue fighting for improvements to our education system, reinvestment into our communities, restoring and expanding labor rights, environmental protections, reproductive health care, and overall greater social and economic justice. I am also working hard to retain the Democratic majority in the State House that we worked so hard to flip in 2022. I am a former Detroit Public Schools teacher and a former Oak Park City Council member.
  • Equitable Education Funding and Policy
  • Reinvesting in our Local Communities
  • Protecting Our Environment
As a former teacher, education policy is deeply personal to me. We need to continue to work towards funding our public schools more equitably and increase investments back into the classroom to ensure that educational attainment is not determined by zip code.
Investing in our local communities improves the quality of life for everyone. I support critical investments in water affordability and safety, affordable housing, infrastructure, public transit, and economic development support for small businesses. We must address climate change by investing in renewable energy, holding corporate polluters accountable, and protecting our air and water. We must address the harms of centuries of racial inequality by tackling systemic issues.
I would recommend watching the TV show “Parks and Recreation.” The character Leslie Knope embodies the type of public servant that I strive to be--someone who is relentless, someone who does not compromise on her values, and someone who will do whatever it takes to serve her community (even if that means scrubbing snails off a sidewalk or cleaning up a river herself).
My favorite book is Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. I have read it several times when I was going through a difficult transition, and it has always helped me find perspective.
I strongly believe it is beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government and politics. My experience serving in the Michigan State House and formerly on the Oak Park City Council has taught me so much about working in government and the importance of serving the community. I have built strong relationships with legislators, constituents, and stakeholders. I understand the importance of coalition building, of working with others who you don’t always agree with, and about how hard and essential that work is.
I strongly believe in the importance of building relationships with other legislators. So much of politics is about relationships, and unfortunately, bipartisanship has suffered in Lansing due to Michigan’s formerly strict term limits. I have always prioritized and valued building relationships throughout my life in every position that I have held. I have served in the State Legislature since 2020 and have built strong relationships with many Lansing representatives.

I am a public school teacher and an Oak Park City Council member, and investing in education and our communities is deeply personal to me. I know first-hand the devastating effect that decades of poor public policy has had on our schools across the state. My years spent teaching have given me the knowledge and detailed policy goals to help us do so much better. I'm running for office because I believe that we need more educators in Lansing making critical decisions on education policy. I am also proud to serve on the Oak Park City Council because I believe that local government plays a vital role in supporting the quality of life for all of us. Unfortunately, our state government does not adequately share resources with local communities. I'm running because I believe that Michigan needs to reinvest in our local communities and fund the incredible initiatives our district is capable of. We need progressive, experienced leadership in Lansing, and my service as an educator, elected official, and community leader have given me the skills and relationships I need to be the most effective advocate for the district.
  • Equitable Education Funding and Policy
  • Reinvesting in our Local Communities
  • Protecting the Environment
As a teacher, education policy is near and dear to my heart. We need to more equitably fund our public schools and increase per pupil minimum spending to ensure that educational attainment is not determined by zip code.

Investing in our local communities has become an even more critical issue with the economic impact that COVID-19 has had on municipal budgets and small businesses across the country. We need increased revenue sharing and an end to unfunded mandates, as well as relief for small businesses and economic development funding.
Climate change is an existential threat that we must address here in Michigan by investing in renewable energy, holding corporate polluters accountable, and protecting our air and water. I support shutting down Line 5 and increasing funding for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

We must address the harms of centuries of racial inequality by tackling the systemic issues that have resulted from racist policies and legislation. I believe in large-scale criminal justice reform, including ending mandatory minimum sentencing, abolishing cash bail, and eliminating pre-trial detention except in extreme cases when necessary to prevent imminent violence or flight risks. I also believe in economic justice, supporting a raise in the minimum wage to $15, guaranteeing paid sick time & paid family leave, expanding the Elliott-Larsen Act to include the LGBTQ community, & instituting a graduated income tax.
One of the people that I have admired most in my life is my former college advisor and professor, Alan Bloom. Professor Bloom was one of the greatest teachers and mentors that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He taught me so much about what it means to be an excellent teacher, a life-long learner, and about the importance of community building. I try to live my life in the way that he did and encourage my students to do the same. He often told me that his goal in life was always to leave places better than he found them. The world is certainly a better place because of the contributions that he made while he was here, and I hope to leave that same legacy behind.
I would recommend watching the TV show "Parks and Recreation." The character Leslie Knope embodies the type of public servant that I strive to be--someone who is relentless, someone who does not compromise on her values, and someone who will do whatever it takes to serve her community (even if that means scrubbing snails off a sidewalk or cleaning up a river herself).
I am someone who is rooted in community and understands the importance of directly serving the people that I am elected to represent. I value relationships and work hard to cultivate them. I am also an incredibly hard worker and am willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish my goals. I am a fierce advocate for my students and their families and for all groups that have experienced oppression. I am someone who will always show up for my community.
My favorite book is "Sidhartha" by Herman Hesse. I have read it several times in my life when I was going through a difficult transition, and it has always helped me to find perspective during difficult times.
I strongly believe that it is beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government and politics. My experience serving the City of Oak Park on City Council has taught me so much about working in government, and about the importance of serving the community. I have built relationships and worked on initiatives much like I would in Lansing. I understand the importance of coalition building, of working with others who you don't always agree with, and about how hard and essential the work is. I am well prepared because of my government and political experience to serve the 27th District.
I believe very strongly in the importance of relationship-building with other legislators. So much of politics is about relationships, and unfortunately bipartisanship has suffered in Lansing due to Michigan's very strict term limits. I have always prioritized and valued building relationships throughout my life in every position that I have held. I already have relationships with many of the current representatives in Lansing, and will work hard to leverage those relationships and build new ones to help accomplish policy goals and advocate for my district.
As a teacher, I want to be on and ultimately be a leader on the Education Committee. I want to push for policy to increase funding for schools, ensure equitable funding, eliminate public funding for for-profit charter schools, and ensure that all charter schools are held to the same standards as public schools. I would also like to be on the Local Government and Municipal Finance Committee to advocate for increased revenue sharing and an end to unfunded mandates.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Michigan

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states.  To contribute to the list of Michigan scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
