An election rematch occurs when the same candidates run against each other in consecutive election cycles. In the 2021 general election, 10 elections in Ballotpedia's coverage scope were rematches between the same candidates who ran for office in 2019. The 10 rematches represented about 1.2% of all 830 general election races in Ballotpedia's 2021 coverage scope. Rematch elections in 2021 included:

Republicans won one to Democrats' four and minor party and nonpartisan candidates' five of the 2021 rematches In 2019, the results were identical, with Republicans, Democrats, and minor party and nonpartisan candidates winning the same number of races.

In 2021, three rematches were decided by a margin of 10 percentage points or fewer. In 2019, two of the same races were decided by a margin of 10 percentage points or fewer.
