An election rematch occurs when the same candidates run against each other in consecutive election cycles. In the 2023 general election, 11 elections in Ballotpedia's coverage scope were rematches between the same candidates who ran for office in 2021. The 10 rematches represented about 1.0% of all 1,082 general election races in Ballotpedia's 2021 coverage scope. Rematch elections in 2023 included:

• Five state legislative races
• Three county legislative races in our coverage scope.
• Three local races in our coverage scope.

State legislative rematches

In the 2023 general election, five state legislative races were rematches. Three of these 2023 rematches occurred in different districts than in 2021, either due to redistricting or because the election was for an office in a different legislative chamber (state House vs. state Senate).

County legislative rematches

The general elections in three districts of the Erie County Legislature were rematches of the 2021 races in those districts.
