SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota: According to a report released by the U.S. Attorney’s office, federal cases filed in South Dakota are up, with a more than 20% increase in criminal cases prosecuted.[1] The 83-page report[2], released by U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson on August 31st[3], details the office’s prosecution numbers and their community outreach efforts to the Indian reservations.[2]
In 2011, the U.S. Attorney’s Office filed 691 criminal cases in federal court, which is an increase from the 555 filed in 2010. Of those cases filed in 2011, 45 percent were violent offenses. Finally, there was a 13 percent increase in the number of defendants from 2010 to 2011.[4][1]
In addition to the prosecution numbers, the report also details the appointment of tribal prosecutors as Special Assistant United States Attorneys (SAUSA’s). The U.S. Attorney’s Office handles federal cases originating in Indian Country. To date, prosecutors from three tribal governments have been appointed as SAUSA’s.[2]
