Basic facts

Republican Mayors and Local Officials was a representative body of local and city-level official in the United States affiliated with the Republican Party. According to its website, the organization was "a recognized advisory agency to the Republican National Committee, which provides logistical support to the organization. RMLO and its members shall respect the political doctrine of the RNC and will adhere to the RNC's legal prerequisites."[1]

Purpose

Republican Mayors and Local Officials' stated goal was to work with Republican officeholders at the local level to help them "express, develop and preserve the philosophy of the Republican Party"[2]. The RMLO worked with Republican officials to assist the party in developing municipal policy.

In paperwork provided to the IRS in 2000, the RMLO stated its purpose as:

"A. To enable Republican officials elected at the municipal level to express, develop and preserve the philosophy of the Republican Party in cities and towns across America;

B. To assist, where possible, in identifying Republican Mayors and Republican elected local officials; and

C. To consult and cooperate with each other, the President of the United States, officers of the Executive Branch and members of the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as Republican national, state and local leaders, to assist in the identification and resolution of significant issues of concern to the nation, particularly those affecting government at the municipal level."[3]

Membership

The group's membership was limited to Republican mayors and other officials elected to local office in either partisan or nonpartisan elections.[1]

As of October 2001, RMLO had approximately 750 members nationwide.[1]
