Republican governor uses veto in battle with Democratic legislature in New Mexico

SANTA FE, New Mexico: Last week, New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez signed the state's $5.4 billion budget legislation, including several line-item vetoes.[1]

The budget cuts spending by $156 million from last year -- a drop of about 3 percent. Among the items that Martinez vetoed:[2]

  • $450,000 for the Commission on the Status of Women
  • $200,000 for the state centennial activities next year
  • $100,000 for the redistricting committee
  • $50,000 for pre-session expenses before next year's session

Timothy Jennings (D), Senate President Pro Tem, said the vetoed redistricting money will hurt lawmakers' ability to hold public hearings across the state.

During the session, Governor Martinez (R) vetoed more than one-third of the 284 bills that the legislature sent to her desk.[3]
