Retha Mattern has a strong sense of community and a desire for servant leadership. These values have shaped her actions and purpose, leading her to seek election to the North Dakota State Legislature as a representative from District 7.

Retha believes in sensible, practical government that allows people to achieve success with limited government involvement. She believes the legislature should focus on investments over expenses while giving space for businesses to grow and create opportunities for economic success. She values community safety and well-being, and is committed to continuing to make Bismarck and North Dakota a place for families to choose to live.

Retha is active in the state Republican party, serving as District 7 Vice Chairman, frequently attending local events, and has served as a delegate to several state conventions.

She lives in Bismarck with her husband and two children, where she works at Bismarck State College, currently serves on the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education, and is involved in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck Hockey Boosters, and Bismarck Aquastorm.
  • Retha believes strong, safe communities are essential for the continued economic success in North Dakota. Families must have good educational and employment options.
  • Retha will focus on solving problems rather than causing them. She works to understand the challenges that affect her neighbors and community.
  • North Dakota must stand strong against federal overreach into the industries that drive our economic success, such as agriculture and energy. Business and industry leaders and innovators will find better solutions to their challenges than the federal government will.
Retha believes in good leadership that allows people the opportunity to succeed. Many of the challenges that individuals face stem from kitchen-table problems that are overlooked by many who are in a position to reduce bureaucratic red tape. As a homeowner, as a parent, and as an engaged citizen, she sees the need to bring a problem-solving mindset to the state legislature. Mattern understands the challenges of raising a family in today’s society while also saving for retirement. She knows the challenges of worrying about the rising property tax bills while also watching the prices at the grocery store rise. As a legislator, Retha is focused on policies that will solve problems, ensuring that District 7 remains a place where local businesses can grow and succeed.
As a rural state in a northern climate, North Dakota must continue to work hard to attract families and businesses to invest and grow in our state. We are facing a workforce shortage that threatens our ability to grow our economy. We must respond to the changing business environment, and ensure we are preparing people for opportunities. Business small and large alike need talented, skilled people to fill their workforce needs.
Our agriculture and energy industries are vital to our success. Continued federal overreach in terms of environmental regulations would threaten or even shut those industries down.

Compromise is not and should not be a dirty word. It is essential for every functioning system involving more than one viewpoint. An "all or nothing" approach taken by lawmakers is sure to make them popular among ardent groups of followers but leaves most of their constituents with nothing. Moving forward, seeking the best outcome possible for the most people, and working collaboratively with people of differing viewpoints shows strength, not weakness.
