The California Supreme Court's longest serving justice, Justice Joyce Kennard retired from the court after twenty-five years of service.[1] She was appointed to the court by former Governor George Deukmejian in April 1989. Kennard had previously served as a judge for the municipal court in Los Angeles and worked as a deputy attorney general and a staff attorney for the Second District Court of Appeal.[1] A couple of her more recent notable decisions involved overturning California's same-sex marriage ban in 2008 and finding that corporations, like Nike, should be held liable for deceptive advertising practices in 2002. Though appointed by a conservative Republican governor, Kennard, in her opinions, has frequently sided with defendants over their prosecutors and workers over their employers. Many of her rulings have worked to expand civil rights for the gay and minority communities.[1][2] In regards to her retirement, Kennard states: "I think it's time to start a new chapter. I've been wedded to my work, working seven days a week... I'd like to finally make time for my long-neglected friends."[2] | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
