On April 15, 2015, Judge Philip Trompeter retired from Virginia's 23rd Judicial District's Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court after 30 years on the bench. He was appointed to the court at the age of 32 and spent a large part of his judicial career working to improve the lives of children and individuals with mental health issues in his community.[1] Trompeter graduated from the University of Richmond School of Law and was admitted to the bar in 1977. Soon after, he was appointed to serve as a special justice to preside over psychiatric commitment hearings and then became the vice president of the Mental Health Association of the Roanoke Valley. During his time on the court, Trompeter helped establish a support group for families affected by mental illness called Families in Touch as well as the Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children in Roanoke Valley (now part of the Children’s Trust Roanoke Valley), which trains volunteers to serve in the best interests of children in courtrooms and communities.[2] Trompeter has been described as the "epitome of what good judges strive to be." Regarding his work for children, attorney Ellen Weinman stated, "It’s as though they’re all his children, and there’s not another judge that puts their heart into it the way he does."[1] | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
