Justice Mary Muehlen Maring retired from the North Dakota Supreme Court on December 31, 2013 after seventeen years on the bench. Justice Maring has written more than 700 opinions for the Supreme Court. She helped establish the North Dakota Juvenile Drug Courts and the Justices Teaching Institute, a public outreach program with the purpose of educating teachers about the legal system and the role of courts so that they may teach the public and promote a better civic understanding. Regarding her time on the court, Justice Maring stated: “ "I think the work itself is tremendously rewarding. It is intellectually stimulating. I have the opportunity and the privilege to work with four other tremendously bright individuals who care so much about the work we do, and I couldn’t ask for a better job, really. It’s been wonderful.” ” Justice Maring was appointed to the North Dakota Supreme Court by Governor Edward Schafer on March 1, 1996. She was elected to the court the following November and re-elected in 1998 and 2008. Before serving on the court, Justice Maring worked as an attorney in private practice for twenty years and served as a law clerk to Judge Bruce C. Stone of the Minnesota Fourth Judicial District. She received her undergraduate degree from Moorhead State University in 1972 and her J.D. from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1975.
